In tonight’s Law & Order SVU episode, Detective Amanda Rollins left the Special Victims Unit. She chose to take a safer job. She was now a professor and Fin and Benson were feeling her loss. They’ve seen a lot of people come and go. They just never thought she would be one of them. Benson was also trying to figure out how to operate the unit with a body down when McGrath came to her with a proposal. McGrath was trying to save money for the city. He wanted Benson’s help in clearing some Bronx cases. He was doing his best to convince her to go up there when suddenly the Bronx came to Benson. Benson was targeted by a Bronx gang she’s had some dealings with.
Benson took down two members of this gang for rape and murder. She also helped in killing two other members of this same gang. Well, some people got mad at her for that. They came by on motorcycles and they were beating her up when she pulled her weapon and shot one of them in the leg. The gang got away on their motorcycles, but they’ve now targeted a cop and that comes with repercussions. Benson reported what happened to her. She mentioned they were from BX9. She theorized she had been greenlit. Only she was more worried about her son than what the greenlit might mean for her.
What Benson couldn’t understand was why now? She put those boys away in the summer and it’s now winter. Why did the leader of BX9 greenlight her now? Fin suggested Duarte might know. Duarte does run the gang unit up there and he would know more about BX9 better than anyone else. Benson wanted to ignore what Fin said only she couldn’t do it when McGrath suggested she turn towards Duarte for help. The police were gearing up to go after BX9. Benson sent her son out of the city. She returned to work to find Captain Duarte making himself comfortable in her chair. And so she used that to her advantage.
Benson asked Duarte about the gang’s motives. Duarte found out the two boys she put in prison had gotten stabbed to death by a rival gang. Their deaths were the reason Benson was greenlit. The gang wanted to show that they were strong and what better way than targeting not just a cop, but a captain? The police had to make a good showing against them for that and so Benson agreed to handle Bronx SVU. The rape cases up there were usually tied to gangs. Benson was hoping by taking the job of helping out that she would gain enough knowledge about the leader of BX9 to take him down.
His name is Oscar Papas. Benson figured helping would eventually lead to him and she failed to take in the full situation in the Bronx. The Bronx SVU was in a shambles. The Lieutenant that was in charge was so dismissive of his victims that he fired his best detective and the detective sued. Detective Terry Bruno didn’t just sue. He demanded real change and he got his former lieutenant fired while at the same time getting his job back. Bruno’s tale of police corruption was what brought on an official investigation by the DOJ. Feds were breathing down their backs. Benson was asked to step in and she eventually did so.
The first thing Benson did in the Bronx was ask Bruno what’s the case keeping him up at night. He told her about a series of rapes of deaf girls. These girls would be knocked out and dragged somewhere quiet where they were then raped. Bruno’s former boss never brought in an interpreter to speak to the girls.
They actually arrested one of the victims because they thought she was making a gun sign when she was using ASL to ask for help. But this case haunts Bruno because he knows his boss arrested the wrong man for it. They arrested a drug addict. He doesn’t have any history with young girls. He was going through withdrawal when he was questioned and he confessed because that was the only way they would give him drugs.
Bruno also said the rapes didn’t stop once the guy who supposedly did it went to prison. But the official reports of these rapes stopped once that man was arrested. Bruno then got fired for trying to advocate for the girls. He sued. He’s back on the job and he wants to finally solve this case.
Benson agreed to help yet the DOJ demanded that she help with open cases. They didn’t want her working closed cases. Benson was about to break the bad news to Bruno when he called her first. Bruno said another deaf girl had been raped and this time it escalated to murder. It was technically a new case and so Benson was allowed to work this one.
They tested the DNA. Bruno got fast-tracked by bribing the lab technician. The results were that the rapist wasn’t in the system. Although, he was on ancestry. Benson and Bruno found a half-brother who helped get them in touch with his birth mother and that’s how they found their perp. The perp has a deaf mom. He wanted to hurt her and he couldn’t and so he chose to rape deaf children in his rage. And the last one got out of hand because she hit her head in the fall.
And Benson’s people managed to find the kid that she shot. They brought him to the hospital and he woke up to see Benson smiling down on him.
