Man charged months after young French cyclist dies in horror lorry crash

A man has been charged after a French cyclist died in a horror road crash involving a HGV lorry in Glasgow earlier this year.

Emma Burke Newman, from Moulineaux, Paris, was cycling at the King George V Bridge junction in Broomielaw, Glasgow, at around 10.10am on Friday, January 27, 2023, when the incident took place.

The 22-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, but she was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

Police have now confirmed a 69-year-old man has been charged in connection with the collision which resulted in Emma's death.

The man will be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal.

Nobody else was injured during the incident. The road was closed for nine and a half hours while CIV carried out enquiries.

Emma was just beginning her career as a designer and worked for New Practice, an architecture firm based in Glasgow and had only lived in Scotland for three months.

Her colleagues described her as a "brilliant young woman".

Since her tragic death, her parents have been campaign in her honour to make roads safer for everyone.

Rose Marie Burke and John Newman said their daughter would still be alive if there had been better road infrastructure to separate cyclists from HGVs and buses.

They said Scotland’s cycling infrastructure was “a decade behind or more” compared to other countries.
